Improving Your Roads

The Roads Renewal Program is a pivotal driver in shaping a more prosperous City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, aligning with our overarching vision and mission.

We are a forward-thinking City that is committed to deliberate and strategic growth aimed to enhance the well-being of our community - both today and for generations to come.

More than $22 million is being invested in the improving and upgrading the City's road network in the 2023/24 Financial Year.

Why Do We Resurface Roads?

An effective paved road should provide a durable, predictable, running surface with adequate resistance which is able to withstand the effects of weather.

When the road surface condition becomes poor or defective, rehabilitation or resurfacing work is needed to restore the pavement surface to the required level of service.

The environment oxidises the bitumen in the road and can cause it to become brittle and crack. This lets water into the base layers of the road, ultimately forming potholes and uneven surfaces.

Over the years, the constant traffic flow wears the surface down and it becomes too smooth, which can be dangerous during wet weather.

What Are The Benefits Of Resurfacing?

Assessing What Roads to Renew

The City's Engineering team assess which roads are due for renewal by collecting condition data and complying with the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) and the WA Local Government Association (WALGA).

The Engineering team assess the remaining life of a road, which determines the type of materials they will use to renew it.

Roads that have reached end of life will be revived with asphalting, whereas a road that has several years left can be resealed, extending its life span for several more years.

Several defects are assessed when determining the types of works needed. These include:

  • Structural capacity
  • Roughness
  • Skid resistance
  • Visual surface defects
    • Potholes
    • Uneven surfaces
    • Rutting
    • Cracking
