Smoother roads ahead

We’ve heard your feedback, and road improvements are one of our community's top priorities.

The City is making improvements to O’Connor and McCleery Streets in Somerville as part of the Roads Renewal Program, with works scheduled until April 2025. These upgrades will enhance road durability and driving conditions. Construction and repair works will occur in stages, with teams working in different areas simultaneously.

Access to the O’Connor Fresh Supa IGA shopping precinct will remain open, and our roads team will liaise with residents and businesses regarding continued access to their properties throughout the project. Temporary road closures and detours will be in place for public and worker safety. Please follow all traffic control signage and ensure there is no water running from your property onto the road.

The City will update residents and business owners weekly via text message and email throughout the project. Click here to submit your contact details for updates.

We will also hold a weekly project update meeting every Wednesday morning at Mosconi Circle Park between 7:30 and 8 am commencing from 5 February 2025 for residents and businesses to meet the project team and ask any questions.

Types of Works

The project will involve various types of works, including demolition, stabilisation, kerbing, sealing, concreting, asphalting, and roundabout improvements.

This involves the removal of existing structures or road surfaces to make way for new construction. Demolition work may be necessary for major redevelopments.

Road stabilisation is the process of improving the strength and durability of the soil or sub-base beneath a road. This is typically done by mixing the soil with stabilising agents like lime or cement to increase its load-bearing capacity and prevent future road damage.

Kerbing refers to the installation of curbs along the edges of the road. Curbs help define the road’s boundaries, manage water drainage, and protect the road from erosion and damage caused by vehicles.

Sealing involves applying a protective layer of bitumen or other materials over the road surface to prevent moisture infiltration, reduce wear, and extend the road’s lifespan. This process also helps to improve the road’s skid resistance and appearance.

Concreting is the process of pouring and setting concrete for parts of the road infrastructure, such as intersections, pedestrian pathways, or curbs. Concrete is used in areas that require a strong, durable surface that can withstand heavy traffic and extreme weather conditions.

Asphalting is the process of applying a layer of asphalt, a mixture of bitumen and aggregate, to create a smooth and durable road surface. Asphalt is commonly used for resurfacing roads and providing a high-performance driving surface.

Roundabout improvements involve upgrading existing roundabouts to enhance traffic flow and safety. This can include widening lanes, improving signage, adding better lighting, or redesigning the roundabout’s layout to accommodate higher traffic volumes or improve visibility for drivers and pedestrians.

Project Stages

Demolition

28 January - 17 February

During this period, your existing crossover may be removed, and a temporary road base crossover will be installed. This temporary crossover could remain in place for the duration of the project. If your crossover needs to be removed, you will receive a personal letter informing you of the specific day this will occur. Please note that access to your property will only be restricted for a short period during the day while the work is being completed.

Traffic Restrictions:

Some of the work may be carried out under road closures or "Stop/Slow" traffic control.

Stabilisation

4 March - 26 March

The vehicle convoy involved in this process can be up to 100 meters long. The operation is quite noisy and may cause some vibrations. It involves large trucks, multiple vehicles, and heavy machinery such as graders and rollers.

Traffic Restrictions:

This process will require full road or roundabout closures. As the work moves past the front of your property, there may be times when you cannot directly access your property. Since the work area will change throughout the day, the route you take when leaving your property may not be the same one you can use to return. If the road in front of your property or the access road to your property is closed and you need to get through, please follow the directions of the traffic controllers on-site. Be aware that the detour may be quite long.

Sealing

11 March - 27 March

A bitumen tanker will spray the road surface with bitumen, followed by tipper trucks spreading aggregate on top. Please note, this is not the final product.

Traffic Restrictions:

This process requires full road or roundabout closures. As the work moves past the front of your property, there may be periods when you cannot access your property directly. Since the work area will shift throughout the day, the route you take when leaving your property may not be the same one you can use to return. If the road in front of your property or the access road is closed and you need to get through, please follow the directions of the traffic controllers on site. Be aware that the detour may be quite long.

Asphalting

12 March - 2 April

A variety of vehicles, trucks, and machinery will be involved in applying the final road surface. Rollers will create some vibration during the finishing process.

Traffic Restrictions:

This work will require full road or roundabout closures. When the process passes in front of your property, there may be times when you cannot access your property directly. Since the work area will shift throughout the day, the route you take when leaving your property may not be the same one you can use to return. If the road in front of your property or the access road is closed and you need to get through, please follow the directions of the traffic controllers on-site. Be prepared that the detour could be quite long.

Kerbing

19 March - 9 April

A small kerbing machine will be followed by a concrete truck.

Traffic Restrictions:

There will be occasional full road closures, particularly at the roundabouts. Where possible and safe, some of this work may be carried out under "Stop/Slow" traffic control.

Concrete

20 March - 18 April

A Bobcat will be working on the verge, preparing the footpath and loading materials in and out of a truck and trailer, while a concrete crew works alongside the concrete truck. During this process, if your crossover is scheduled for replacement, there will be a 24–48-hour period during which you will not be able to drive over it. You will receive individual notification about this, either through a letter drop or face-to-face communication, a few days prior to the scheduled work.

Traffic Restrictions:

There will be occasional full road closures, particularly at the roundabouts. Where possible and safe, some of the work may be carried out under "Stop/Slow" traffic control.

Spraying of Roundabout

From 18 April

Light vehicles with crew members will be spraying the island and roundabout sections.

Traffic Restrictions:

There will be full roundabout closures during this process with detours in place.
