Water in Kalgoorlie-Boulder

From the construction of the Goldfields pipeline more than 120 years ago to today’s recycled water network, our community has continually adapted to living in a dry and remote environment.

Water is one of our most important resources - and in a place like Kalgoorlie-Boulder, managing it well matters. From drinking water supplied through one of WA’s most iconic pipelines, to the recycled water that keeps our parks, ovals and industry running, we manage water differently here.

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder manages one of the largest recycled water schemes operated by a local government in Western Australia, helping keep parks, sporting fields and public spaces green while reducing demand on precious drinking water supplies.

This page brings together information about how our water systems work, current projects, updates on our Wastewater Treatment Plant, infrastructure upgrades and how we’re continuing to invest in our water future.

Where our water comes from

Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s drinking water is supplied by Water Corporation via the Goldfields and Agricultural Water Supply Scheme, traveling over 500km from Mundaring Weir via the historic pipeline connecting the Goldfields to Perth’s water supply.

At the same time, the City has spent decades building and improving local recycled water infrastructure to support community spaces, sporting facilities and industry.

Today, the City:

  • Recycles treated wastewater for irrigation and industrial use
  • Harvests stormwater after rainfall events
  • Operates extensive recycled water infrastructure
  • Continues investing in long-term water security projects
  • Has been recognised as a Waterwise Council for more than 11 years

The City is also the second largest user of recycled water in Western Australia after Water Corporation.

Investing in our water future

The City continues to invest heavily in water and wastewater infrastructure to improve reliability, environmental outcomes and future capacity.

Recent and current projects include:

  • Upgrades to the South Boulder Wastewater Treatment Plant
  • Sewer main extensions
  • Lagoon relining
  • New inlet works and screening systems
  • Ongoing recycled water network improvements
  • Planning and advocacy for the City's Water Bank Project
