Kal City Centre Works Commencing

15 March 2022

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is excited to announce that construction is scheduled to commence in April 2022 on the Kal City Centre project which includes the St Barbara’s Square and the laneway behind the Endowment block.

The intent of the Kal City Centre (KCC) Project is to create an economic transformation in the heart of the Central Business District through regenerated public spaces which will develop numerous attractions, attract investment and improve the livability for residents and visitors.

The City will be delivering a substantial overhaul of the existing public spaces and facilities to create a welcoming space for locals, businesses, visitors and the growing population of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

The City have completed the preliminary works in the area in preparation for the commencement of the KCC Project, as approved in the Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday 14 March.

As part of the planned works, the City will be undertaking a series of upgrades within the Saint Barbara Square precinct. Works will include beautified landscaping and street furniture; new public toilets with a dedicated parent room, Aboriginal art pieces, a bespoke silky pear playground for young children, a stage area and an impressive Superpit water play feature.

City Mayor John Bowler said the project will deliver a redeveloped public space in the heart of the CBD for the community and visitors to once again enjoy.

“The passive open space, complete with a unique children’s playground and water play feature, will bring life back into the heart of Hannan Street and make it a real destination for residents and visitors alike,

“The project has been a long time coming, but will be worthwhile,” said Mayor Bowler.

Project Commencement

From 19th of April 2022, the City’s contractor will be taking ownership over the Saint Barbara Square area and the laneway up to and including the Market Arcade. Access to this area will not be permitted until project completion which estimated for December 2022.

The project will commence with erection of fencing and then demolition of current structures within the perimeter of the fencing.

Parking and Loading Zones

The parking from the Market Arcade to the Kalgoorlie Town Hall will not be changed. The loading zone located in front of Saint Barbara Square will be allocated a temporary loading area – refer to site map.

Grease Traps & Bins

During project construction, for Endowment Block tenants with rear access to the Saint Barbara laneway, the following will be in place:

  • access to grease trap removal can be arranged through the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Construction Superintendent
  • bins will be manually moved by City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder staff and emptied by our contractors, Cleanaway as normal (three times per week)

Toilets

As at the 19th of April 2022, the manned St Barbara toilets will no longer be accessible and will be demolished as part of this project. The tenant-only toilets located in the laneway closest to Saint Barbara’s Square will also not be available for usage.

We kindly ask that tenants use the toilets available in the Market Arcade which can be accessed via Hannan Street. Customers must please use the Exeloo on Wilson Street whilst construction is being undertaken.
