The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is seeking expressions of interest from Goldfields First Nations artists for the production of public art as part of the Kal City Centre Project.

The scope of works and expression of interest document was approved by Council at last week’s Ordinary Council meeting on 27 July 2022. The Kal City Centre Project was relaunched in August last year with the aim of revitalising the heart of Kalgoorlie’s central business district, including St Barbara’s Square and Laneway, transforming it into a vibrant and welcoming centre for locals and visitors.

The City will liaise with local and regional artists in the curation process to ensure equitable representation from across the region and direct economic benefits for local Indigenous artists are realised.

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor, John Bowler said the curating and installation of First Nations art is a critical part of the City centre’s transformation into a space made for everyone.

“First Nations history is instrumental to our Kalgoorlie-Boulder story and the artworks displayed will provide a sense of belonging and pride within our community, as well as provide a refresh to our infrastructure,” he said.

“I’m very pleased with the Council’s approval of the brief which will allow us to start the next phase of this exciting project.”

The Kal City Centre project is funded by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder with an $8 million contribution from the State Government.
