The highly anticipated opening of the Kal City Centre redevelopment project, including the return of the statue of St Barbara to St Barbara’s Square, will take place at 9am on Sunday, 3 December 2023.

The project, which has seen the transformation of St Barbara’s Square into a welcoming urban space for families, locals, businesses, and visitors to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, has been designed to bring life to Kalgoorlie’s Central Business District.

The precinct features a children’s nature playground, water play area inspired by the Goldfields landscape, including a climbing structure in the shape of a silky pear; or karlkurla, the fruit that Kalgoorlie’s name originates from.

Other features of the square include event spaces, entertainment areas, alfresco dining, gardens and accessible toilet facilities.

Kal City Centre will also showcase one of the state’s largest First Nations art installations, featuring the work of 15 local and regional artists celebrating the region’s rich history.

Mayor Glenn Wilson said he was excited to unveil the new precinct to the public.

“Kal City Centre celebrates the union of our rich history, unique landscape and diverse cultures while providing a space that meets the needs of our growing City.”

“The redevelopment of St Barbara’s Square has delivered a refreshed metropolitan hub that will support our healthy, evolving and connected community, whilst showcasing Kalgoorlie’s CBD as an attractive tourist location for visitors.”

“The completion of this project comes at a thrilling time for our City, with the opening coinciding with the iconic St Barbara’s Parade, as well as the upcoming festive season just around the corner.”

“I encourage everyone to come and visit the precinct, admire the spectacular First Nations artwork, support the local surrounding businesses, and enjoy this new and exciting space.”

The space will also have night lighting installed and CCTV cameras in use.

Kal City Centre will officially open to the public on Sunday, 3 December 2023 from 9am, with activations in St Barbara’s Square and Santa’s Grotto.
