12 July Update: Next Steps for the Oasis Gym

Now that the Oasis Gym has reopened and we have welcomed back members and the public, we’d like to tell you more about what we have done to ensure the facility's safety over the last week and what the City has planned going forward.

What’s been completed over the last week

On 1 July 2024, the presence of mould was identified in the Centre's administration office. The City’s Environmental Health team promptly investigated the matter and closed the gym as a precautionary measure.

The City brought in environmental specialists, who are the only National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited providers for indoor air quality inspections. They also have over 30 years of experience assessing the environmental safety of buildings.

A thorough investigation was conducted, with results assessed against relevant guidelines, standards, and codes of practice. No mould was detected inside the gym, and areas requiring cleaning to remove excessive dust were identified and cleaned.

The City’s team worked hard to ensure the investigation and cleaning were completed as fast as possible, limiting the downtime for our members.

What are the next steps?

Although the space is safe for members to use, there are still some water leakages coming through the roof, especially after significant rain. We have implemented temporary solutions to ensure that water is collected, and areas are kept safe from hazards.

And for the good news

A tender for repairing the roof at the Goldfields Oasis will be presented at this month’s Council Meeting on 22 July 2024. If approved, these permanent repairs will strengthen the current infrastructure for years to come.

Pending the adoption of the 2024/25 budget, the City will also progress further upgrades around the Centre as part of the Oasis Master Plan. These include bathroom renovations and air-conditioning replacement works.

Temporary Gym Closure

The Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre Gym has been temporarily closed effective 5pm, 2 July 2024 as a precautionary measure. On 1 July 2024 the presence of mould was identified inside the administration office, the City’s Environmental Health team immediately investigated, and the gym was identified as also possibly affected.

The City is committed to resolving this matter as quickly and efficiently as possible and will provide regular updates to all patrons and the community.

Other areas of the Centre remain open to the public including the stadium, pools and pool deck, creche, compound, spa and sauna as well as group fitness classes. The recreation centre is working towards additional pop-up fitness classes and will advise members and public when confirmed.

How long will the gym be closed?
