We're building a year-round venue for community events

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is creating a contemporary, all-weather Multipurpose Community Pavilion, alongside the Goldfields Arts Centre. The new venue will provide a flexible venue for markets, festivals, performances, exhibitions, school events, community celebrations, and more - all year round.

This $10.6 million project will provide a flexible venue that supports activities and experiences that positively impact the social and economic development of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, while enhancing public spaces to support community gatherings.

Once complete, the pavilion will act as an open-air car park with a roof. For special community events and hire, the doors will close to create a weatherproof indoor facility accommodating up to 2,100 people.

A Space for Everyone

The pavilion has been designed to meet diverse community needs, including:

  • Community life – markets, festivals, concerts, school expos, art workshops, and community barbecues.
  • Day and night activations – delivered by the City and other local event organisers.
  • First Nations recognition – a dedicated artistic space to celebrate cultural expression, connection, and healing, building on the strong partnerships formed through the Kal City Centre First Nations Public Art Project.
  • Safe spaces – supporting outreach services delivered by local organisations and agencies, particularly for youth and vulnerable community members.
  • Arts and Cultural Precinct – together with the GAC, the pavilion will anchor a vibrant cultural hub, attracting locals and visitors while linking to other priority precincts in the CBD.

Project Timeline

The project will be delivered in phases to ensure works are completed safely and with as little disruption as possible.

Phase 1: Site Preparation and Car Park Closure

  • Works commence: 5 October 2025
  • The Cheetham Street car park will be closed for the duration of construction.
  • Alternative parking is available at Hanbury Street and Egan Street Car Parks, as well as on-street parking at various locations.
  • Access to the Goldfields Arts Centre (GAC) will remain open at all times, with both sides and the rear entrance available for use.

Phase 2: Ground Works

  • Timeline: October 2025 – January 2026
  • Activities will include earthworks, site levelling, and preparation for the pavilion’s foundations.
  • Traffic management will be in place on Cheetham Street at different times to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians.
  • A lane closure between Boulder Road and the GAC will remain in place for the duration of the works.

Phase 3: Steel Structure Construction

  • Timeline: February 2026 – June 2026
  • Erection of the pavilion’s 50m x 60m steel frame structure with curved roof design.
  • Installation of large-scale features, including insulated roller doors, exterior digital panels, wall shutters, and fencing.
  • Construction activities will focus on lifting and securing the large roof spans, creating the building’s distinctive shape.

Phase 4: Finalisation and Opening

  • Timeline: Planned for June 2026
  • Completion of finishing touches and safety inspections.
  • Transition from a construction site into a functional, flexible venue.
  • Once finished, the pavilion will operate as an open-air car park day-to-day, and transform into an indoor/outdoor events facility.
